Telescope choice

Postby Rustyfind on Wed Dec 02, 2009 4:26 pm

I am researching to purchase a telescope. We are moving to the beach so would like some feedback on preferences. I know you can never seem to get just one thing to cover everything but, I was looking at spending 4 or 5 hundred on a telescope. The two examples are, Meade ETX 90AT, Celestron Omni XLT 120. I thought about the refractor so that we could watch ships. Does the 90AT also have a daytime use? We will be using the Telescope mainly for Astronomy but we are just getting started. Thanks Rusty

The 90AT is the better choice for daytime work. It will provide upright images, but reversed right to left as delivered, but you can further correct that with the addition of an erecting prism, Meade #932 More importantly, it has an alt-az mount which is by far the better mount for day work than an equatorial mount, as provided on the XLT. Further, for astronomy use, the ETX-90 has a computer to help you locate objects. The XLT does not.
