Celestron drive motor issues

Postby KD5NRH on Fri Mar 26, 2010 2:10 am

I have a Celestron Powerseeker 127EQ with the drive motor (93514) for it. The drive has been great for astrophotography, but in the last couple of weeks, it has been hard to get running. When I turn it on, the power light comes on, but the motor doesn't turn at all, and it's completely quiet. If I reach behind it and press on the gearbox a bit, it will start running, but fairly slowly. (Yes, even compared to normal for a clock drive.) The speed control has to be near maximum for normal star tracking now, but I remember it being less than halfway when I first got the drive. A fresh battery didn't change things noticeably.

Wiggling the whole drive unit produces a definite change in the motor sound, which makes me wonder if the gearbox has gummed or bound up somehow. Anybody else having this problem?

First thing I would do is to get with Celestron to see if they will replace it or at least diagnose the problem. To be honest, given the price of the motor, I would just replace it. It is probably not worth the hassle of fixing.
