2" Wide Field Eyepieces

Postby Star Guy on Thu Feb 24, 2011 10:04 pm

Dear Optics Planet,
Do you have a preference/opinion on using the following EPs in a C8 SCT?
41mm Panoptic, 40mm Pentax XW, 31mm Nagler.
Your assistance would be much appreciated.
Thank you!
Star Guy

Hi Star Guy!

I've used and owned Panoptics, Naglers and XWs, but not those specific focal lengths. What are your specific objectives, though? On paper, at least, I like the 31mm Nagler on these, because it gives you a nearly identical true field of view as the Panoptic and XW, but with a touch more magnification. Might as well go for the little extra detail it gives you if the FOV is the same. Yes, you will get a little more distortion at the edge with the 82 degree field of a Nagler compared to a 68 or 70 degree like the Pan or the XW, but this has never been objectionable to me and I am very fussy . At the center of the field, I doubt you'd notice a difference on any of these.
