One inch eyepieces

Postby Tom C on Wed Mar 02, 2011 4:05 pm

Hello to all.
I'm new to this forum, but I have a question or two about telescope eyepieces. I recently purchased a used Simmons model 6450, 900mm X 4.5 inch telescope. Unfortunately, it is missing all eyepieces. I have measured the opening for the eyepiece, and determined that I need 1 inch eyepiece(s) for this telescope. There seem to be very limited choices for 1 inch eyepieces, so I wanted to know if an adapter, to allow the use of 1.25 inch eyepieces, is advisable? If the adapter is not advisable, it seems that eyepieces somewhere in the 4mm to 25mm range are appropriate for this Simmons model.
Can anyone recommend a specific brand/size eyepiece for this telescope based on experience, or firsthand knowledge? Any input will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Tom

One inch or .965" eyepieces are bad news, as you have already discovered. What little yo can find new is the lowest possible quality. If you could find some old orthoscopic eyepieces in .965" go for it, otherwise forget it. Adapters can be equally hard to find and, be warned, there is no guarantee that will solve the problem, since a lot of reflectors don't have enough focus travel to come to focus with an adapter installed. Tough to predict on these old telescopes, so you'll probably have to bit the bullet and do some trial and error.

Meade used to make an AD-1 adapter, but I haven't seen any availability on this in quite sometime. However, I have seen some recent ads by Orion that list what appears to be the identical adapter because it even uses the same part number, 07159. Give them a call.

Last resort is to switch out focusers, but that opens up a can of worms and there is also very little available in focusers for reflectors. Not usually cost effective on a telescope like this. I would definitely try the Orion adapter, first.

Periodically used .96" EP's are available for sale on Astromart.com. Presently, a 10 & 25 mm Kellner EP along with a diagonal is offered for $55. It costs $12 to join Astromart in order to be able to purchase/sell. Kellner EP's are not generally considered to be "high" quality EP's. You might not want to spend too much money on an EP as the likely quality level of an old Simmons Reflector Telescope could well be suspect.

Thanks and good point.

I should have mentioned Astromart as a source for obsolete parts. Bought stuff there myself.
