Need our opinion on a telescope Optics Planet has on sale, go ahead and ask! Post some hints and tips on various telescope brands and configuration.
In my Astronomy class we have a project about telescopes. We are supposed to find the best telescope for $600, I have no idea where to start, there are too many kinds. Can anyone tell me what the best telescope is, in your opinion. Thanks
"Best" is very subjective. It depends on what you are the important aspects you are looking at. Are you only concerned about the optics, or does the mount an important aspect as well? What about computerized positioning and other "modern" features? Are you concerned about size and/or weight? Some types of telescopes "suffer" from slightly decreased light gathering in the center of the field while others may encounter slight distortion at the edge of the field.
IMO, the best telescope that you can get for $600 is one that you make yourself. You can make an 8" Dobsonian for about $600 if you don't want to grind the mirror yourself, or possibly even a 12" Dobsonian if you grind your own mirror (not difficult, just a little time consuming). Just do a search for "telescope build dobsonian" and "telescope mirror grinding".
