I'm in the market to purchase my first telescope. I was leaning toward the Bushnell 675x5. I was just curious if anyone else has used this telescope and what their thoughts were.
The reason I liked it was the cost ($139 ). 5" aperture should allow a bang for the buck. The down side is that it isn't motorized. However, I think I would rather get a better telescope and skip the electronics. A lot of the fun for me is going to be exploring the skys on my own and learning where different stars & planets are.
Any comments on this telescope would be appreciated, I could not find this telescope listed on Bushnell's web site so I'm guessing it may be a discountined item.

Good for you.
It's nice to see someone who wants to learn the sky the old fashioned way! Exploring on your own without the aid of electronics is slower, but in the end you will have a more personal and intimate knowledge of the night sky. When everyone else runs out of electricity, you will still be going strong! Most of us "older" observer's learned to navigate by star hopping and point and shoot and we know how to read a star map very well indeed.
The Bushnell 675x5 Reflector, http://www.opticsplanet.net/bush-ts-785003.html, is a great value in a first telescope. It moves you well past the usual beginners telescope in performance and features. In my book it rates as the best buy in a beginners telescope. _________________ ----------------------
