Hi

I have tested every premium grade spotting scope on optical test charts in side by side comparisons and I can promise you that all are within a hair of each other, optically, and that no one scope tested at the top in all optical categories. Optically speaking, you are on safe ground with either of these.

It really is going to boil down to personal preferences as to features and brand. For instance, I prefer the focusing system on the Zeiss, but some folks prefer a helical focuser found on the Swarovski. On the other hand, for hunting, I love the fact that the Swarovski is already armored and is also one of the most compact and sleek 80mm class scopes on the market. If you plan to be carrying the scope out in the field and mountains for elk hunting, I like the Swarovski. If you are going to be glassing from a base camp or vehicle, I like the Zeiss.

Joanie,
It's funny that this topic would come up now. I am considering upgrading my scope and also have the same two in my final list. But I also included the Kowa 883 ED. Where would you rank it in comparison? Should the Ziess be included in my finals?
Thanks,
John

Joanie,
Sorry, I meant should Lieca be included in my final list?

Hi

Yes, the Kowa 883 is a must see before buying a spotting scope - have seen it once and fell in love. Keep in mind, though, this is a big scope, but not as big as you might expect for an 88mm scope. Kowa hit a home run with this one.

I am still anxiously awaitng the new Leica. Have yet to see one, but I am confident it will be a great scope - I carried the old Televid APO for years and loved it. The new Lieca, to be sure, will also carry the typical Leica price tag, so be ready. I will, of course, comment as soon as I get my hands on one.
