Celestron Ultima 80 or C90

Postby shenko on Sun Sep 13, 2009 12:33 pm

Two scopes, same brand, about the same size and price, different designs.
Will the C90 provide a good image at 100X for looking at the moon and Jupiter?
Will one of these scopes be better than the other at 37X (or so) for terrestrial use?
Is a 50mm or 60mm eyepiece available for the C90?
Thanks in advance for the response. These OP forums are a great resource.

Hi

Thanks. Glad to help

You will get fair and usable images at 100x on the moon and planets with a C90 and that is about what you can expect with a mak at that kind of price. Not going to be on a par with a more expensive scope, but you'll see plenty on the moon. If you want a dual purpose scope, for day and night work, the C90 is the one to get. Optics at 37x are a touch better with the Ultima, but you have no eyepiece options as with the C90. That's a big plus for astronomy work.

Unfortunately, there is no way to add a longer focal length than 40mm to that scope, since you won't find longer focal lengths than 40mm in 1.25" barrel size and that 1.25" is your only option on a C90. No way to convert it to 2". The problem is the small 1.25" barrel size. To get the optics you need at focal lengths loner than 40mm requires a 2" eyepiece barrel.
