Harsh conditions/ Low light

Postby jmcarr63 on Wed Oct 21, 2009 7:40 am

Joanie,
I am a swamper of sorts. Birding in Florida has its pleasures on the shore but, its a little tough inland. I deal with 100 plus degrees temp and 100 percent humidity especially at sunset or just after. I have been looking for 100mm objective with zoom from about 10 to 30. Weatherproof is a necessity. Hard use on a tripod over the shoulder through palmettos and such is daily. My cost category is less than 500 for the scope. Help !!

Hi

Don't sucker for the 100mm scope myth at that price. Optical quality is everything in a spotting scope - use that $500 to get a better quality 80mm scope, not a big 100mm scope and $500 will only get you a mediocre 100mm scope. Also, I would never advise a 100mm scope for carrying over the shoulder. It's not worth the extra weight and size. A good 80mm scope will do everything and more than a mediocre 100mm scope. For that price, I would look at the Celestron Regal 80ED - optics are very good for the price. In this price range include the Vortex Skyline and the Alpen 788are also good choices.
