Nikon or Vortex to replace Burris

Postby bruco on Sun Jan 03, 2010 3:14 pm

I have a Burris High Country 15-45x50 that is not doing the job, which is letting me see .223 holes at 150-250 yards on a Shoot-N-C type target. I have been looking at Nikon Prostaff 16-48x65 and Vortex Nomad 20-60x as an upgrade, but am wondering if I'm going to get that much more by going to the ~$400 class of scope or do I need to bite the (.223) bullet and shell out even more $ to accomplish my goal.

Thanks for the great spotter-specific forum, BTW. Lots of good info here.

Hi

Distance is everything in a scope for target shooting and no 50mm scope will cut it at those distances. A good 60 or 65mm, like the Nikon Prostaff or Vortex will get you out to 200 yards under good conditions, but, even that is pushing it for scopes that size. At that price, you would be better off with an 80mm scope, like theAlpen 788 or the Vortex Skyline. The larger objective of a good 80mm scope in this price gives you bit more margin for error.

If you really must go to 250 yards, yes, it is going to cost you more. That little extra distance is going to put a strain on even a $400 scope. My usual recommendation on a 300 yard scope, for instance, is the Bushnell Elite 20-60x8=http://www.opticsplanet.com/628045.html0 or the Brunton Eterna 20-60x80.
