nikon v. minox monoculars

Postby nate on Tue Jan 05, 2010 10:54 pm

I've owned a Carson 7x32 monocular for some time but have wanted something that's truly more pocket-sized. I recently had a chance to try a Minox MD 6x16 monocular. I was rather disappointed with the Minox and found that my current Carson monocular seemed optically superior. I realize the Carson's larger size gives it some optical advantages, but considering the Minox is almost 3 times more expensive, I expected better.

My question is how does the Nikon 5x15 monocular compare to the Minox (and the Carson)? I suspect it would be better based on its price, but unless it's significantly better, I don't know if I'd want to drop $200 on one.

Hi

The Minox is more expensive, mostly because it is Minox, but, I agree, not that much better than the Carson.

When you step up to the Nikon HG, however, you are stepping up to the very best in monocular optics and it is truly thumb size. The Nikon HG 5x15 is an exquisite monocular - I know, I have owned for years. Optics are every bit as good as the more expensive Zeiss monoculars. Go with the Nikon The 5x15 is great with eyeglasses, but if you don't wear eyeglasses, there is also the shorter eye relief 7x15

First of all, thank you for the reply. I read it right away but hadn't taken the time to comment. Based on your comments, I won't rule out the Nikon. Since I just got some decent binoculars recently, spending another $200 will have to wait. For a cheap fill-in, I ordered an Audubon 6x16 monocular. It's hard to compare based on memory, but the Audubon doesn't seem all that far behind (optically) the Minox I mentioned in the original post.

Hi

Actually, the Audubon is a Chinese knock-off of the Nikon, and, no, not going to be a Nikon in terms of image quality, but I think you will be surprised at just how good it is, considering the price. If I had $30 to spend on a monocular, be my first choice
