Problems with Bushnell Rainguard coatings

Postby Guest on Sat Mar 18, 2006 1:49 pm

Hi I have a bushnell elite potting scope 15x45x60 and a pair of Bushnell binocularrs. Both have rainguard. The lenses are perfectly clean, no dust, dirt, wipe marks or anything. Under normal light the coating look great, but when I go outside, and point the objective toward the sun, you can see 1000's of wee little specks all through the coatings. This is the way the scope and binoculars came. IS this normal?

Hi

Not to worry, those specks are normal and will have no effect on actual performance.

whew!!! That's s big help/ Thank you so much. I couldn't figure out what the heck those little specs were. Thanks for your help it is much apperciaated. BTW, can I ask your professional opinion on this rainguard. Is it a gimmick, or does it really work? I have gotten my scope wet before and instead of leaving big beads of water, all the droplets turned into tiny tiny drops of water. How exaactly would this benifit me if I am in the field birding or hunting?

You are welcome.

The rainguard reduces the effect of water on the lenses by making the droplets smaller, as you have noted, but it does work. I'd say it is more a benefit for hunting, where you are more likely going to be using the bino in a downpour. We birders tend to seek shelter when it rains.
