Bushnell Scope Recommendation Clarification

Postby ironmine on Sun May 01, 2011 5:10 pm

Hi. In your Spotting Scopes For Target Shooting guide, the Bushnell 20-60x80 was the minimum recommended scope for 300 yards. Were you referring to the $738 Elite model? Or, also the more budget friendly $419 Legend model?

The scope will be used for target shooting with my sons at the range ... 200 to 300 yards .... during daylight hours.

Thank you.

Hi Jim

That was, unfortunately, the much more expensive 20-60x80 Elite for 300 yard work. On a good day with excellent seeing conditions, the Legend might do the trick at 300 yards and for sure no problem at 200 yards, but going with the better optics on the Elite will give you more flexibility to deal with seeing conditions.

Another option is the Celestron Regal 80F-ED, which was not on the market at the time I wrote that article for OP. I would rate the Regal right there with the Elite and it will save you some cash, too.

Thanks for the information Joannie.

Also, in numerous older posts, you state that there is no good table top tripod for these 80mm spotting scopes. Is that still the case? Do you strongly recommend that I find a suitable full size tripod, instead?

Thanks again. I will soon be placing my order with Optics Planet.

You are very welcome, of course.

Yes, unfortunately, I still have no source for a really stable table top tripod for an 80mm or larger source. You can, of course, still use a table top with an 80 mm scope, but you are way, way ahead in terms of stability with a full size tripod when you get to 80 mm scopes.
