Fixed Eyepiece Purpose Question

Postby ironmine on Wed May 11, 2011 9:47 pm

Hi.

My wife and I will soon be purchasing the Bushnell Elite 20-60x80 788045 spotting scope from Optics Planet. It will be used for all-around range use .... .223 and .308 bullets at 100 to 300 yards.

Someone at our range has offered to sell me a fixed eyepiece that is used on this Bushnell scope. It is #783000 30x80mm Wide Angle Long EyeRelief Eyepiece. I see on your website that Optics Planet sells a similar eyepiece in 22 power.

Would these eyepieces offer any advantages to us at the range?

Thanks
Jim

Hi

Not really, not unless you wear glasses and can use that 30x for your target work.

The main advantage of these fixed power eyepieces is better eye relief than a zoom and also wider field of view at that magnification than you get at the same magnification on the zoom. Fixed power eyepieces can also offer a bit better resolution and clarity than a zoom, but it all depends on which fixed power and which zoom you are comparing. In this case, if there is an improvement, it will be slight, as the Elite zoom is fairly decent as zooms go.

On the other hand, I love wide-angle, fixed power eyepieces for digiscoping and just all around use, They are very comfy for viewing, especially if you wear glasses when you observe.

Could you make an estimate as to what yardage this fixed 30 power would be adequate for? Bullet holes on paper at 100 yards? 200 yards? Or, are there two many variables to answer that question.

The person only wants $40 for the eyepiece, and one of our gun ranges requires shooting glasses be worn. I think I'll buy it.

Anyway .... thanks for all the great information. I've spent a lot of time reading through the forums, and the articles on this website. I've learned much. And, I now see what patience you have answering so many very similar questions from optics "newbies." Lol. I have been recommending your company and this website to others.

You are very welcome. Always glad to help.

30x is certainly enough for 100 yard work and on a day of good observing conditions, it may even be enough for 200 yard work. I would certainly buy the eyepiece for the sake of using the scope with shooting glasses, if nothing else and, heck, $40 is a great price. I'd go for it.
