Carson CloseUp 7x18 vs Brunton 7x18 Pocket Scope

Postby GYS on Thu May 26, 2011 10:08 pm

Hi,Is there a significant difference in brightness, sharpness and quality of views between the Carson CloseUp 7x18 and the Brunton 7x18 Pocket Scope? Will the Brunton yield superior views at both close and distant viewing? I don't want to pay more for the Brunton if the difference in actual performance is hardly noticeable.

Hi

No, not going to be a significant difference in optics. Both are good values in an inexpensive monocular.

Thank you for your reply.

Does the Carson CloseUp have any exterior rubber parts or coating? Which of the two will be more durable?

I read in the Carson website that the CloseUp uses K-9 prisms and fully coated lenses while the Brunton uses Bak4 prisms and multi-coated lenses. Are the Bak4 prisms superior to K-9 prisms? won't the Bak4 prisms and multicoated lenses give the Brunton brighter and clearer images than the Carson?

Hi

Yes, on paper, at least, the specs favor the Brunton, but for a casual use monocular, either will work for you just fine.
