Hi

I see no reason to go to a 100mm scope and the need for a heavier tripod to support it. A good 80mm scope will do the job with less weight and bulk.

My favorites in that general price range are the Celestron Regal 80F-ED (superb optics for the price), the venerable Alpen788

How do the [link=http://www.opticsplanet.com/alpen-brand.html]Alpen[/link] 788 and the [link=http://www.opticsplanet.com/celestron-brand.html]Celestron[/link] Regal 80 compare head-to-head? I've read good reviews for both [link=http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-brand.html]scopes[/link], but one is in the $350 range and the other is in the $600 range.

Hi

The Alpen is a great buy, but it is not an ED scope, so will not be quite in the same range as the Regal for resolution and contrast.
