ultima 80 vs C90 vs 60mm ED glass

Postby jingerale on Thu Jul 28, 2011 4:46 pm

So this started as a search for a range spotting scope. Was looking for something decent for no 200 yards max range shooting.

I was pretty set on the Ultima 80 as I think it presents very good value. Was also consider a Barska 20-60x60 with ED glass for about $200( not sold on Opticsplanet so I won't link).

but the more I look at the C90, the more interested I got. The mere mention of the option of hooking it up to a SLR tickles my fancy. I've always wanted to photograph the moon but never wanted to drop the $ on a long lens and/or TC.

Anyone have experience with both scopes? The practical side of me wants to just get the Ultima 80 and call it a day.

Any input on the above scopes or opinion on a 60mm ED glass scope will be appreciated

Hi

You can also hook up your SLR to the Ultima 80 - peel off the rubber eye guard and you'll find threads for a t-ring. Just buy the correct t-ring for your make and type of SLR, then mount the camera body to it and you are ready to take pics through the eyepiece. Keep in mind that when it comes to photos of the moon with any spotting scope mounted on a tripod, you will be limited to 20x or so on the magnification if you expect sharp pics. You'll need a motorized telescope mount to track the moon properly if you want to take pics at higher magnifications. Still, I have taken some nice pics at 20x with very fast film to keep exposure times as short as possible.

Thanks Jne_K, you've just made my choice a little harder. It's good to know the Ultima 80 can be used with a camera.
I've read a lot of your comments and you seem to really love the Ultima 80 in the sub $200 range because if its 80mm objective and quality. What do you think is more useful, a 80mm objective non-ED glass or a 60mm objective with ED glass.

Thanks

Hi

That really depends on the optical quality of the two scopes. Assuming equal optical quality, though, it has been my experience that going ED on a good 60 can almost, but not quite, bridge the gap to a good 80 without ED. They are close, though. I opted years, ago, to replace an 80mm with a 65 mm ED and have never looked back.

Thanks again! I went with the 60mm ED scope.
