Is the Celestron Ultima 100 good for my purposes?

Postby MarkV on Sun Oct 23, 2011 2:17 pm

I live on the coast, do not wear eyeglasses and will be viewing from my living room. I may also want to connect a digital camera at some point. I have two usage cases:

1) Wildlife observation in the 50-300 yard range.
2) I like to observe the sailboats on the ocean. They sometimes come within 1000 yards of me.

My research has led me to believe that the Celestron Ultima 100 might be good for this. Am I correct about that? Is there another scope I should be considering in this price range (~$300)? Would I be able to get something significantly better if I spent a little more?

For your use, the Ultima 100 will do just fine, assuming you mount it on a large enough tripod. A 100 mm scope is a heavy scope and it will not do well on a cheap tripod. Otherwise, your expectations are reasonable and well in line with what a typical spotting scope can do.

$300 can get you a slightly better quality 80mm or 60mm scope, but not significantly so and not enough to offset the advantage of a 100mm objective. If you don't mind the size of a 100mm scope, go for it.
