Kowa/ Pentax/ Vixen

Postby Ernest One on Mon Apr 03, 2006 7:35 pm

I'm continuing my search for a spotting scope for birding/ photography. I've narrowed my choices to the Kowa TNS-661 with TSE-Z9B eyepiece, the new Pentax PF-65ED-A with ZF zoom eyepiece, and the Vixen Geoma Pro 67S with GLH-48 zoom. I realize the Kowa 661 model does not have the ED glass (too costly for me). I'm wondering if the Kowa remains the best choice of the three scopes mentioned even though it does not have the ED glass like the others? The price of all three look to be all about the same.

Also I'm wondering whether you have all of these scopes in your show room and whether you have a good way for me to assess/ test the various scopes I'm considering? I may just take a drive to your business from central Illinois.

Hi

The Kowa 661 with the new Z9B scored higher for me in my tests than either the Pentax or the Geoma. All are good scopes, but I prefer the Kowa. Part of my preference for the Kowa stems from the eyepiece. The Pentax 65ED must be used with the 70503 zoom, http://www.opticsplanet.com/pentax-xf-z ... piece.html and the eye relief on this zoom is rather minimal at 11-15mm. I much prefer the Kowa zoom.
