How good is an Alpen 788 20-60x80mm

Postby Guest on Wed Apr 05, 2006 5:44 pm

Just wondering how an Alpen 20-60x80mm compares to mid priced scopes like the Nikon Sky and Earth 15-45 60mm scope and the higher end scopes by Zeiss, Swarovski, Pentax, and Leica. Would you say they are 85% of the high end Zeiss, Swarovski, Pentax...etc...?? I need a spotting scope for seeing .233 bullet holes from between 100 and 300 yards, long distance observation, and astronomy.

I have read some good reviews on the alpen at:

The International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association

Thank you for your assistance!!

These Alpen's are pretty much junk. Try a Bushnell Elite 20x60x70, or, if you can, step up to an elite 20x60x80 ed.

Haven't had a chance to put the Alpen through its paces, since we just added this manufacturer to our website. I would predict, though, that it will compare to other scopes in its price range with the same features, as most scopes in this price range are sourced from China.

Will it have the resolution for 300 yard scoring? I would say 200 yards, certainly, but unless it is an exception at this price, 300 yards will be a stretch. For that kind of work, I typically recommend the Bushnell Elite 20x80, as a minimum.
