Telescope or Spotting Scope

Postby bertair1 on Mon Mar 17, 2014 4:01 am

Do I need a Spotting Scope or Telescope to see ships about 10-20 kilometres from my home.?
I am seeing ships through my 10x50 binoculars, but in not much detail.
I don't expect to see the ships names from so far away, but I would like to see more detail and do not know if a spotting scope or telescope would be worth getting . I am elevated and can see to the horizon from my home.
I have no plans to use whatever I buy for astronomical viewing, except perhaps the moon on occasions.

I don't really have an idea of what I need to budget for, but can say $200-$300 buy me what I am looking for complete with a tripod which would be kept indoors and rarely moved from its location.?

Suggestions and advice please.

Take a look at the Redfield Rampage 20-60x80 spotter package with the optional OPMOD tripod for $309.00. The 80mm objective lens offers better resolution than smaller scopes, and since you're not going out with it, the extra size is simply a benefit. It comes with a table top tripod, but get it with the OPMOD tripod for taking outside for viewing the moon or other terrestrial objects. Variable magnification makes it quite versatile. But you're asking too much to see a lot of detail with any optic at that distance. Air is not static. There are humidity, mirage and other limiting factors at extreme distances. But this will serve you well in your price range for your application. You'll have it for a lifetime. Have fun.

Steven Thank you for the info & advice... I intend to order your suggested scope with the tripod.
However I see a Celestron MAC 90 as a very popular scope in the Optics Planet catalogue.
What are your thoughts on this and is it a bulky scope for the uses as I have described that I am looking to use a scope for in my previous posting ?
Can the Redfield Rampage be fitted with a camera adaptor for my NiKon D7100 camera ?

The Mac 90 is a good choice, but I didn't choose that because I think you'll get more benefit and fun by having adjustable magnfication. And no, you won't be able to install a DSLR to the scope. But with a universal adapter like this one from Alpen, you can attach a point and shoot camera.
