spotting scopes fro 300-500 meter

Postby rajnair7 on Sat Jul 05, 2014 1:12 am

I am currently using a Nikon Prostaff 9x25 5.6 Binoculars. This only allows me to see a bird under 100 meters in clarity ( clarity to identify each color on the feather) . What kind of an equipment do I need for clarity at 300-500 meters? Do I need a spotting scope or some special telescope? Do any of the spotting scopes under 500$ work for this purpose Or should I look for above 1000$ scopes?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Even most spotting scopes will have a hard time at 500 meters differentiating feather colors. You're expecting too much. Mirage is also a factor. The more you spend, the better the resolution, but again, you're expecting too much at that formidable distance. Even the best spotters will probably not do what you're hoping for. Some of the best are included in this test on Riflescope Blog. Read it and get a good idea of what quality can do.
