The Kowa fluorite versions are the high grade lens versions of the Kowa spotting scopes much as the HD is for Swarovski, APO for Leica and ED for Nikon etc.
The fluorite lenses eliminate chromatic abberation (color fringing) around objects which improves image brightness, color rendition and most importantly, image resolution. The effect is most noticeable at higher magnifications.
There are those who will tell you that fluorite, ED, and so on is not needed unless you plan to do photography with your spotting scope. However, to a trained eye, a fluorite (ED, APO, and so on) spotting scope is noticeably sharper at higher magnifications for visual use. If you will be shooting at long ranges and need the utmost in resolution, the fluorite is well worth the additional expense.
As spotting scopes go, the Kowa Prominar tests favorably with the finest instruments in the world. Although not quite as well known as the Swarovski, Nikon and Leica, Kowa owners (myself included) swear by their instruments.
