Hi

Angled spotting scopes are best for situations where you will be sharing the spotting scope with people of different heights and for viewing objects that are slightly elevated such as birds in trees and mountainsides. Also, angled spotting scopes can be kept lower on the tripod which adds to stability. If you plan to use turn your spotting scope upwards to view the stars (a great idea) the angled spotting scope is much easier to use.

Straight spotting scopes are best for a car window inside a vehicle or for observing from a sitting position. This configuration also balances better when adding a heavy SLR camera body for photography (though the angled is popular for use with smaller digital point and shoot cameras). The straight version is also preferred by shooters who use a spotting scope at a shooting bench and by hunters who lay flat on the ground to observe game.

However, either type can be used with success for any of the above applications (with varying degrees of comfort). Saleswise, the split is about 50/50.
