My 8 yr old daughter wants a
telescope really bad for christmas, she is a science nut! What is a
good telescope in the $200-$225 range. we live out in the middle of
the mojave desert, lots of stars and very little light from the
surrounding area (street/building lights)

For younger children, I would recommend a refractor because the eyepiece is at the bottom of the telescope and it is easier for them to reach. For $200-250, I would recommend the Celestron Firstscope 80EQ,
http://www.opticsplanet.net/celestron-firstscope-80-eq-refractor-telescope.html or a small computerized refractor such as the Meade DS208AT, http://www.opticsplanet.net/meade-ds-2080at-model-314-f-10-goto-refractor-telescope-20084.html

If size is a concern, you should also consider a small Maksutov telescope
such as the LOMO Astele 70zm, http://www.opticsplanet.net/astele70.html.
This little scope also offers the advantage of being as useful by day as it
is at night.
