I hope you can help. I am looking for a gift for my husband. We have a
home on the coast and he would love a telescope. This will be used to
look out to sea, at the mountains, perhaps the stars too. Can you
suggest a good basic one without too many sophisticated bells and
whistles? Thank you.

A telescope that you can use by day and also a little at night would be a
spotting scope. A spotting scope is a small telescope designed to be used by day, but in the right model can also be used at night. Here are some
excellent spotting scopes that will work well for you no matter what time of
day you use them.

* Celestron C90,

* Meade ETX90, http://www.opticsplanet.net/meade-etx90ss.html
* LOMO 70zm, http://www.opticsplanet.net/as70zmzoomsp.html

These are all quality, versatile instruments that will give years of
pleasure.
