Glowing optical ring needed

Postby Eido on Thu Jun 17, 2010 12:14 pm

This is an odd query, but y'all are the optics experts and I'm stumped. I hope you can help.

I'm looking for a glowing optical ring. The ring itself needs to be thin and any power cord attached to the ring also needs to be very thin. The ring should be about 3/8 to 1/2" in diameter.

The application is (don't laugh) computer gaming, specifically the kind of game that requires shooting of a firearm in simulated combat situations. The ring would be physically attached (suspended) in the center of a computer monitor and function as a constant reticle for use in accurately aiming weapons.

The need arises because most of these games, usually called First Person Shooters (or FPS for short) have reticles that expand and contract with movement or recoil. Most annoyingly, they very often blend into the swirling background during close quarters combat. A fixed, glowing, external reticle attached to the monitor would be very useful and likely to improve performance in close-quarters combat due to superior aiming capability.

I'm willing to McGyver something to fasten the ring to the monitor, probably with fishline and duct tape(!). This would need to be something that could be removed and re-installed relatively quickly.

But the basic requirements are the ring and power cord have to be very thin in order to not obscure the game field. Most FPS allow you to switch between close-quarters weapons and snipers -- or powerfully scoped ARs -- so whatever I come up with has to be thin enough to not interfere with scoped shooting.

Can you think of anything in the optics world that might help me out here?

Thanks,
E

Hi

A fiber optics ring light, sold for microscopes might be modified for your application, but those are woefully expensive. Failing that, I would simply do a google on fiber optics and see what you can find. Have also seen cheap, flexible cable lights sold at Menards and lighting stores, though these are fairly thick.

Thanks for the quick reply. Those are too bulky and (wow!) too expensive, but looking at those led me to some search terms that I hadn't tried before and I think I might have found something that I can adapt. Much thanks for your help.
