A UV filter reduces some of the blue overtones in a photo because the blue sensitive chemicals in film are also sensitive to UV light.

A neutral density (ND) filter reduces the amount of light entering the lens Which is useful when you are using fast film and want to increase exposure times for special effects. Think of it as another way to control film speed.

A polarizing filter acts like a Venetian blind and only allows wavelengths
of light that are traveling in the same plane to pass through. Since glare
is caused by wavelengths of light scattering in all directions, this is a way to reduce glare, especially when taking photos over water. Most polarizing filters can be rotated to control the amount of glare reduction needed.
