Progressive glass lenses for Wayfarer?

Postby mshedden on Sat Jul 10, 2010 4:56 pm

Hi Liz,

I am thinking about getting a pair of Wayfarer RX5184 #2012 52mm with progressive transitions lenses in GLASS. I realise that these will be heavier than plastic or polycarbonate. (I don't play sports, so unbreakability isn't really a requirement for me). I recently wore an old pair of glasses with glass lenses and was amazed how clear they are compared to plastic/polycarbonate (also, not a scratch on them).

What is the index of the glass lenses your lab uses for these? I have had glass lenses in the past and I was wondering if higher index glass is normal these days compared to 20 years ago. Will they be thicker than Polycarbonate?

My prescription is :
Right -4.50 -1.00 163 ADD +1.25
Left -3.00 -1.00 70 ADD +1.50

Also, do the gray transitions get darker than the brown?

Thanks!

Malcolm.

Also (while I have you) is the 5184 model the largest RX wayfarer at 52mm?

Are the larger sunglasses versions RX-able in my prescription?

Hi,

1) Our lab only offers the high index glass in the progressive lenses. The index is 1.60.

2) The Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer Prescription Sunglasses RB2140 is the largest of the Wayfarer family. It offers a 54mm eye size. They can be made to order with clear lenses like all of our prescription eyewear.

Thanks for the info, also:

What glass do they use in single vision lenses - high index?

Thanks again.

Single vision will open your material options tremendously. I would recommend polycarbonate or high index polycarbonate with your prescription. Glass will be thicker and considerably heavier.
