Video Heads for Digiscoping

Postby mike_nich on Sun May 31, 2009 9:05 am

Good morning, Jne!

What would be your preference for a video head on my Bogen 3021BPRO tripod (not a great tripod, but then using one is an act of desperation for me) for digiscoping with the Brunton Eterna using the Alpen 706 or the Nikon 8344 adapters?

You keep nudging me toward my point-and-shoot (SD1000), and since you seem like pretty smart gal I'll gamble $70 on the Alpen. Still I prefer my DSLR in full manual mode, so the Nikon 8344 is a consideration.

Going off topic now, how do you get the birds to turn face forward? I've got some reasonable pictures of bird's butts, but not something I care to point to with a lot of pride. (Yeah, my life is blue collar comedy.)

Thanks.
Mike

Hi Mike

For an 80mm class scope, either the 128RC2 or the 501HD which is probably overkill.

Just don't be tempted to mount the Nikon on the Alpen - if you want to use the Nikon DSLR, you will need the Nikon adapter.

Seriously, you can always do a "pishing" It is simply making a sound to get the birds attention without scaring it away. You can see an explanation on the excellent Cornell site on birding, All About Birds, which has a ton of great info on birding and digiscoping.
