Tripod recommendation

Postby rmbates on Tue Feb 16, 2010 3:44 pm

I've got a Konus Konuspot-80 20-60x80 (3.1") Spotting Scope 7120. It seems to be a great scope for the money with good clarity and brightness. It came with a table tripod, but it's about worthless as far as I'm concerned. I'll be using my scope mostly for spotting at the range where it is usually windy. The Konus is relatively light (about 3.5 lbs.)and nothing bugs me more than a scope that is jittering around all of the time (old eyes). So, I'm looking for a tripod that will hold the scope very firmly but don't want to spend a fortune. Considering the Bushnell Advanced Tripod 784030. Can only find a couple reviews on this tripod which are both positive, but 2 is not a very large sampling. Do you think this tripod will do the job for me or is there something else that might be recommended? Thanks

There are no bench tripods that will do a great job on an 80mm scope, so you are on the right track by looking at a full size tripod, such as the 784030. You can't put such a tripod on the bench, of course, but you can usually get the legs spaced under the bench well enough to allow you some access to the scope at least.

The 784030 is an all metal tripod - no plastic head - and is a great value for the money. The only thing it lacks is a quick-release plate, so that means threading and unthreading the scope each time you use it. If you want that same tripod with the quick-release head, go with the Bushnell 784040 It'll set you back just over $100, but I think the convenience of the QR is worth it.
