Tripod & Head for Pentax PF-65 EDA II Angled Spotting Scope

Postby DANL on Sun Nov 07, 2010 10:34 am

Hello Joanie,

I am looking for a tripod and head for my 65 mm Pentax. It weighs about 3 pounds with the XF 20-60X zoom eyepiece. I will be using it at the range and for wildlife viewing.

I looked at a Manfrotto 128RC head and found it to be very smooth to tilt and pan but am considering the 700RC2 instead based on the lighter weight. Would the 700RC2 be adequate for my scope and would it be as smooth as the 128RC? I find jerky heads to be very frustating!

For tripod legs, I am considering the Manfrotto 190 based on less weight and lower price compared to the 055. I am nearly 6 feet tall and thinking the height of the 190 should be sufficient with my angled scope.

Thank you very much.

Dan

P.S. Once I try the scope at 100 and 200 yards at the range I will post a report under your Spotting Scopes heading.

Hi DanL

Yes, the 700 RC2 is an excellent choice for a 65 mm class scope and, if anything, will be smoother than the 128 RC and, as you noted, at a nicer weight. I love it.

The 190 will work, yes, but you may have to extend the center column a bit more than with the 055 to get the height you need. The good news is that this is not a serious issue with the weight of a 65 mm scope, but it could be a disadvantage in a high wind at higher magnifications or for photography. Don't see it as a big issue on the range, though, or for typical wildlife viewing. If you need to keep the wieght, down, I'd go for the 190. I am a tall gal at 5'10" and it works fine for me.

Dear Joanie,

Thank you for your helpful reply.

This morning I checked the Pentax 65mm at 100 - 200 yards. I could not see .223 bullet holes much past 100 yards, and definitely not at 150 yards and beyond. I will post a complete report under your Spotting Scopes heading.

The Pentax will be returned and I will most likely move up to an 80mm.
