Canadian student looking for stereo dissecting microscope

Postby Deusfaux on Wed Jul 19, 2006 4:16 am

Except I have no idea where to start.

Although I am a student, this would be purely for home use/interest.

I'm looking for something similiar then that I last used in some university biology classes.

I dont have much interest in the compount/wet slide style microscopes as I dont find the cellular level type stuff that interesting.

But the stereo dissecting ones we used were very fun to look at insects or electronics or whatever.

How much am I looking to spend? What other options to have to look through? I dont have a starting point!

Hi

The best buy on the market right now is the LOMO SF-50BS. It's all metal and built like a tank. Optics are very good.

For something cheaper, you can drop down to a plastic scope such as the Celestron 4040, but the LOMO is well worth the difference in price.

Could you tell me more about why you recommended the LOMO model?

Again, I know nothing about comparing different brands or what I should be looking for.

The price on the LOMO is perfectly fine, I wouldnt need to drop down, and could possibly go higher if worthwhile.

Hi

For the price, the LOMO is the best buy due to its metal construction (compared to the usual plastic construction at this price) and its excellent optics. Parts and repairs are also more readily available than with other brands at this price. Really won't find a better stereo for the money.

why is there so much recommendation of that particular brand?

even the guide on buying microscopes seems to exclusively refer to LOMO

does this website have more to do with them than just retailing some of their products (owned by the same people?)

what is the SF100 about?

How much can I expect to pay for shipping to Canada? Is there a Canadian dealer I should check out and likely save a pile of money on shipping/duty?

Hi

Yes, we are associated with LOMO, but the facts I stated are nevertheless true. The LOMO is the best stereo we carry and also one of the best buys on the market. You are,of course, welcome to purchase a lower quality, plastic scope, made in China, from our website, but that's up to you.

The SF100 offers higher magnifications that the SF50, but is otherwise similar.
