Brand Consufusion..Help

Hello,

Interested in doing some land viewing and basic planetory / star gazing (yes, beginner living in a guilding), I was given a BAUSCH & LOMB telescope for Xmas by my wife.

I did some research and get mixed vibes on the quality. I have read that for begginers it will probably not make a difference (the model I got is the 78-0040 , 3.5" obj lens, 1000 lenght) but was hoping for some clarity in the general overall order of quality amonghts telescopes....orion, bushell, etc in your opinion and please please shed some light on the BAUSCH & LOMB brand which apparently belongs to Bushnell (who is sadly regarded as a cheaper brand??).

Yes, Bausch&Lomb is owned by Bushnell and has been for some time. For years the B&L name went on their best grade of products. Recently, Bushnell has discontinued the B&L name on all sporting optics and will use the B&L name in the future only with contact lenses.

So much for history. B&L has made some excellent astronomical telescopes in the past and this is one of them. At 90mm, it is a respectable sized refractor, and as such, should provide good images up to at least 150x on a night of good seeing conditions.

I would rate it with a Celestron or Meade refractor of similar size. It should definitely not be confused with one of the less expensive Bushnells.
