The XR-5 Tube is made by the French company Photonis, and it is their version of the American ITT made Pinnacle tube, a thin-film autogated tube. The LPM range is the same, but the signal to noise ratio is higher on the Pinnacle, so resolution should be higher on the ITT tube. That being said, every tube is an individual, and since you are not comparing a single tube to a single tube, the question cannot be answered definitively as to which will perform better. Of course, no tube will work in a completely dark envirionment without an IR light. The Pinnacle tubes are generally considered the best on the market, but again, an exceptional individual XR-5 tube may outperform a Pinnacle tube in the lower end of their performance range.

Technically the XR5 tubes are considered Gen 2+ since they use Multi-Alkali vs Gen 3 GaAs or Gallium Arsenide. The GaAs tubes are more sensitive to low light and have a much higher luminious sensitivity than Gen 2+ tubes. The Gen 3 will outperform the Gen 2+ in extreme low light conditions that you are asking about.
