If it were between the the 12x50 Pentax PCF WP and the Steiner predator 12x40 what would be the better pair?

Better in terms of what?

The Steiner is individual eyepiece focus - good from 40yds to as far as you can see without focusing, but not much use if you are under 40 yds. 10 year warranty.

The Pentax is center focus and will be a touch brighter with its 50mm lenses and multi-coating. It will have a limited lifetime warranty.

Personally, I like the Pentax for its brightness and image sharpness, but you would no doubt get an argument from Steiner fans. Both are good values.
