Camera recommendation for product photography

Postby Shami on Mon May 29, 2006 10:10 pm

I am looking for a good camera to use for product photography. The items to be photographed are quite small, fashion accessories to be precise. Can you recommend a good camera for this purpose for a reasonable amount of money. I am not a photograher either so I would need something that is relatively easy to use.

Thanks
Shami

Hi

If you are serious about commercial photography, a minimum would be a digital SLR camera and a good macro lens, 1:2 or 1:1. This won't come cheap. For a "prosumer" camera such as the Canon 20D or Nikon 100D body, expect to pay between $1500-2000. A truly good macro lens will cost as much, but you can get something reasonable for slightly less.

Thanks, at this stage the price seems quite high. I was hoping for something under $500.

Hi

If you are planning to do this commercially, you won't have a choice. If you want to compete, you have to keep up with other people in the business and they don't use cheap equipment.

Hi

A DSLR, such as the Canon T2 and a macro lens is your best option for serious product work. I think it would be money well spent over a small digital point and shoot.

DSLRs are the way to go when it comes to product photography. You'll get clear and crisp images and great zooming function.
