I own a pair of Nikon 8x23 Travelmates but would like to get something better for an upcoming Alaska land and cruise tour. I started out considering digital binocs such as the Meade 8x42, but then became concerned that the camera use onboard a cruise ship would probably be limited because we'd be moving.
I'm reading good things about the Leupold 8x32 Wind River Katmai, and it's appealing because of its price point.
Is my concern justified about the digital binocs, and am I in the right ball park with the Katmai's for making a noticeable step up from the Nikons, or should I be moving up in price about $100 or more?
Recommendations and comments appreciated.

Katami is a low-end Wind River product imported by Leupold. Even the top of the line Wind Rivers are hit or miss in the quality department. I would start looking at something like an 8x33 Pentax SP.
