I'm looking for a spotter that will fit the bill both at the 100/300yd rifle range AND for my son who wants to look at the night sky, but is under $100.

Would the Celestron C65 or Konuspot 90 work well in this role?

Thanks for any input!

Either would probably work out fine due to the zoom eyepiece and reflector configuration.

It's not the best spotting scope, as it's not as sharp as some other low cost spotters, but you're not going to find many spotting scopes for under $100 that will produce satisfactory astronomical viewing--they just don't have the magnification and brightness.

Some will disagree with me on that, but I can tell you *my* son has no interest in looking at the moon or night sky with binoculars or low-mag scopes, you just don't see enough interesting stuff for it to be worth the effort.

On the other hand, a few nights ago we all went outside to look at the moon with the C65 and even my wife was impressed.

I'd go with the C65 rather than the Konus as the C65 has a lifetime warranty and looks a little more polished (they are identical optically).

See the previous thread on the C65 and Lomo Astele 60.
