I'm shopping for a first microscope for my 9-year old daughter. It seems to me that a stereo scope is more immediately engaging for a kid, and the Meade 8300 is very affordable. However, in reading your responses to various posts, I notice that you never reccommend it. It's a big price jump to the Lomo SF-50 or the Celestron 4040. What's the deal on the Meade?

Hi
The Meade is fine in its price range and appropriate for a youngster. I don't mention it often because it simply cannot compare optically and mechanically to more expensive models, which are needed for more serious applications. I do like the idea, however, of a steroscope for youngsters. No slides or experience needed. Just stick something under the scope and focus. The backyard is full of wonderful objects for this kind of microscope. No problem recommending the 8300 for this kind of activity. _________________ ----------------------
