Night Vision for Boating on reef

Postby kboden on Mon Nov 30, 2009 3:08 am

Hi all
I know this is a topic that is brought up alot however my requirements are fairly specific and I feel my questions has not been answered on previous threads.

First, I travel a long way out to sea and boat at night around the Great Barrier reef area. My radar cannot pickup the reef so I want to be able to see the reef at night (Which is either sticking up above the water line or waves crash on it at high tide)

Since my boat has a windscreen I dont think I can use night vision equipment that uses assisted IR lighting as it will reflect off the windscreen.

I would like to be able to see at least 300 metres in front of the boat under starlight.

Where I usually go with my boat I am in moderatley choppy conditions so I consider that a hands free monocular would be the best idea as I cannot hang on and steer with one hand.

Price : I am willing to spend up to $2500 if necessary however would rather spend less if possible.

I know this seems like a lot to ask however has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

The ATN NVM 14 gen 2 with the Select Package #1 that includes a head mount is in your price range, but it isn't really going to do what you ask very well. Even a higher grade tube or even a third generation product will be hard pressed to show you what you're looking for. I'm afraid that you're asking for something that really doesn't exist for the distance and the conditions you will be in. Remember, night vision is to see in the dark, not necessarily to see FAR in the dark.

Steven
Thankyou very much for your reply. I guess you have confirmed what I thought but didnt really want to believe.
I think im better off just getting a unit I can use for general use not navigation. Will probably look at the yukon Digital Ranger for general use (not through the windscreen) and rely on the radar for night navigation.

Thanks

You're welcome, and by the way, the Yukon Digital Ranger is probably my favorite night vision device out of everything we sell. Enjoy!
