Yukon / Newton Twilight Hornet 5x50 Digital NV?

Postby RocKiteman on Thu Apr 29, 2010 12:00 pm

Howdy. I wanted to get some ‘feedback’ from anyone who has used the Yukon / Newton Twilight Hornet 5x50 Digital Night Vision monocular {YK28013}. Here’s the url for the page it’s on:

http://www.opticsbestbuy.com/YUKON-NEWT ... ision.html

I want to know if this thing is useable for “Kite Aerial Video” or “KAV”. {Do a GOOGLE search for “kite aerial video” and that will explain it MUCH BETTER than I could.} I need some kind of NV with video output that is *reasonably* small and lightweight. It also has to be useful WITHOUT IR illumination, due to it being ‘flown’ above the ground. {Distance between the NV monocular and the ground makes IR illumination ineffective.}

Due to my budget, all I can afford is Gen 1. Until recently, I did not know that there were ANY Gen 1’s that had video output. The Yukon Ranger also has this, but due to it’s size and weight it’s not a good candidate for the job.

Thanks in advance!

PS Sorry if this has been posted under another thread. I didn’t find anything doing a ‘search’, but my online search skills basically… suck. <G>

It may work, but NV devices of all kinds are made to see in the dark, not to see FAR in the dark. Over 100 yards or so depending on conditions you are losing any imaging capabilities, and of course, you have to have quite a bit of ambient light.

Thanks for the reply, Steve.

Would a full- or nearly-full-moon provide enough light?

Again, it depends on how far away the images are.

From what I understand the Yukon digital series the IR is ON all the time but has different brightness level settings.

This looks like a NEW product. It is not even on the Yukon site yet.

Thanks for the info, Cal.

FWIW, I managed to briefly "check-out" a Yukon Ranger{?} a friend of mine brought during a camping trip a few weeks ago. It has {IIRC} two IR illuminators. A 'smaller' one that's on full-time, and a 'larger' one that can be switched on & off.

Cal, do you - or anyone else reading this - have any suggestions on where I might find video online from one of these "Twilight Hornet" things? {My online search skills ain't so hot.}

Yes there are some members that use the Newton Hornet. It is less expensive but may not have all the features of a Yukon Ranger like ability to run off a power adapter. I have not been keeping up lately with models though, and maybe that is included now. Member Andy had one and posted some stuff a year or two ago. JMK Design
