Long range IR Illuminator?

Postby ClassicCoke on Fri Feb 08, 2013 8:34 pm

Just purchased the ATN DNVM-4 digital night vision. Quite happy with the performance. The built in IR can reach 100 yards but I am looking to extend to 200 - 250 yards. What IR Illuminator options available? Can ATN 450 IR attach to the DNVM's battery housing like ATN Storm and Shadow? What do you think of the Night Detective IR? What attachments available for this IR?

No, the ATN IR 450 won't fit either on your DNVM-4 or replace the battery cap. The IR light that has had the best reviews is the Streamlight TL-2 IR LED, and you'd simply use it in your other hand. 200 yards plus is asking quite a lot, though. The ATN DNVM-4 is really an excellent product!

Does Streamlight TL 2 have adjustable focus? BTW, the spec on your website seems incorrect. I believe it is 160 lumens and 9000cd, not 78 lumens and 7900cd.

The DNVM-4 has a tripod screw hole. Do you know any flashlight mount that utilizes the tripod screw hole? Hand holding the IR isn't going to work well for me.

Don't know of such a product, but it seems someone must have an adapter somewhere.

This has been brought up in another post I will talk to our engineers and see if we can come up with an adapter so that our IR450 will mount to the tripod hole. Thanks for the feedback.

When do you think the adapter will be available? Basically, we just need a piece of metal/plastic with two holes. One with thread to attach the IR450B and the other hole is for the dnvm tripod hole. Yes, the DNVM can be viewed by flipping upside down.

Actually, the adapter can be much simpler.. Looking at the IR450-B4, not B3, all we need is a piece of metal/plastic with a tripod hole that can slide into the IR450-B4 mount bracket. In fact, B4 is preferred because it can be mounted or remove easily on the go.

After thinking about it an looking online for a alredy made solution. Think this will work: http://www.botachtactical.com/bt33turakit.html this 1" rail has two holes, I beleive you can use one of the holes to mount onto the DNVM tripod mount and than mount an IR450B4 on to that mount. This will allow you to mount the IR450 to the DNVM and be able to use both together.

I have not tried this yet, but in my opinion it should work.

Thanks for the info. This really helps me find what I need. I think the mount below will also work and much cheaper solution.

On your website , you have IR450B4 with weaver rail. The item is ACMUIR45B4AN14. That weaver rail won't work since it doesn't have any hole, right?

You are correct that IR450 with small weaver rail for the NVM14 will not work. I looked at it and the holes are too small for the tripod screw to fit, unless you drill one yourself.

Let me know how this pans out. Best of Luck

Okay, let me give an update as to what I ended up doing.. Perhaps, this may help others who might be in the same situation..

As for the mount adapter for my DNVM-4, I purchased the 5-slot ergo polymer rail below, cut it in half and attached to the tripod hole.

http://www.opticsplanet.com/ergo-grip-p ... tform.html

As for the IR light, I tried ATN 450mw and TNVC Torch Pro. I ended up returning both of them. The ATN 450mw IR I received is either defective or not compatible with DNVM-4. It seems to put out pulsed beam as opposed to constant beam. The image was flickering. Also, iit is designed to be mounted above the scope, not below. The TNVC Torch Pro is big and bulky. The tail cap switch is awkward to use and the light isn't that bright either. So what I ended up buying? Streamlight TLR-1 IR. After seeing how bright this IR at 100 yards on YouTube, I decided to take a plunge and I am glad I did. This light is small, compact and yet it can reach my neighbor house which is 275 yards away. Yes, I counted my steps and measured the distance. This distance is all I expect to use with my 4X digital NV. The built-in mount of this IR attached to my DNVM-4 firmly. The momentary paddle switch is a joy to use. The fixed spot beam is right in the center of my scope image and very bright. I suspect this IR is putting out at least 500mw of power. It works out well for my scope.

Hope this helps.

Hi All,

I am new to this forum. But I have little knowledge regarding Long Range IR.
Now a day, Extra Long Range IR Illuminators are also available with Day/Night switch & I/O Ports. The housing is rugged with IP 67 rated & sealed against dust and direct water sprays.
