rangefinder for talus size

I need to measure length and width of talus slopes (rockslide areas). The terrain is often rugged, with steep slopes. Your telephone service recommended the Leica Disto A8, but at $800, it's just a bit out of my price range (limit $600). Do you have other recommendations? What features do I definitely need to have?

The Leica is it. No other rangefinder we have will measure area, sorry.
