moving target: which rangefinder technology to try out

Postby hac.chief on Fri Dec 24, 2010 9:22 am

What general type/technology of rangefinder would I want if I need average distance (hypothetical example, here) from my car to a fairly uniform roadside hedge (=fuzzy reflected beam return for sure, & no possibility of optical rangefinding) while driving along the road at 20-40 mph. Accuracy not too vital (two-to-five-foot errors acceptable); response time in seconds OK (as distinct from milli-seconds). The Leica engineers tell me "forget lasers," no problem; the radar rangefinder camp wants several thousand dollars for a possible solution. What else works?

Sorry, I can't think of anything that will work for your application, even radar, since you don't even have a solid surface.
