Smoke, heat & soot damaged my A1 w/50mm lens and telephoto, wide angle and doubler lenses. Could the XTi be considered equivalent?

Hi

Not exactly. Your old manual lenses and accessories will not work on an Autofocus Canon model (EOS). Canon changed the lens mount when they went autofocus. You'll have to start over with lenses.

The XTi is their basic digital SLR, yes, but it has little in common with an old AE as far as features and functions.
