If you spent some time looking at the numerous posts on this forum for pretty much the same question you would know.

One of the best scope bargains out there is the Bushnell Elite 4200 series 3x9x40mm. With the Rainguard feature.

elk hunting scope

I have hunted Elk in Idaho for 20 years with Leupold 4X fixed on a Browning A-bolt composite stalker in 7mm Rem Mag. Really simple, durable set-up.
You can buy really good optics with long eye relief without breaking the bank.
I zero at 250 yds (about 2.5" high at 100 yards). And out to 300 yds you just hold center mass. Why take a shot longer than 300 yds?
The 6X is nice too.
Don't hesisitate to ditch the .338 if you are flinching..plenty of elk killed with 7mm, 3006,308,270......

Shoot the rifle alot and handle it even more...
Have a great hunt
