Scope for .22 LR

Postby Guest on Thu Sep 03, 2009 5:40 pm

I am looking to upgrade my exiting Hawke sports 3-9X50 scope to one which can cope in dusk/dawn conditions. I use the .22 CZ453 American for rabbits, pigeons, etc.

I have been looking at the Bushnell 3200 series and the 4200 - whereas I think the 4200 is way too overscoped for a .22.

Any recommendations out there?

Hi

Any Elite is a good choice. Just a matter of how much you want in terms of features. No, the 4200 is not overkill, not if you are looking for low light performance. The 4200 is fully mulit-coated and the 3200 is only multi-coated. This translates into better light transmission on the 4200.

Thanks - what about the Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 - many reviews suggest it would be close to the quality of the 4200?

Hi

I disagree. The Legend is a goosd scope for the money, but it is not a 4200 in terms of optics or construction. You get what you pay for.

I am curious if anyone can tell me why it seems that in the middle of my shooting outing with both a Ruger 10/22 and a Remington 597, each mounted with the same model bushnell 3-9X40 we go from shooting out the center of a quarter sized target to not being able to hit a golf ball with any reliability at about 50 yards. Is it that the small bore barrel needs cleaned more often to maintain accuracy or could it be that the volume (400+ rounds) is causing vibrations that are changing the setting of the scope so that it needs readjusted?
I would expepct that without bumping the scope between outings that the settings should not need adjusted to shoot at the same distance from one week to the next, is this not correct?

Hi

As long as you resight-in with each rifle - and you must be each time you take the scope off either rifle - it is likely not a scope issue. There are so many variables, here, that you simply have to start eliminating them in terms of not only the scope, but the mounts, the rifle, the ammo, the weather and so on, but if the scope is doing a good job on either rifle, I doubt it is the scope.
