Nikon Monarch or Burris Fullfield II ?

Postby jmcamy on Thu Sep 24, 2009 10:09 pm

I'm looking for a scope for my A-Bolt .308, I take that no reply to my previous post abt. Osprey scopes either means no experience or no confidence, I've pretty
much narrowed my choices to the Nikon Monarch 2-8x32 BDC, or the Burris Fullfield-
2-7x35 Ballistic plex, the Nikon is nearly twice the price, is it worth it?, or are
they both substantially equivalent in quality, performance and durability?
I'm not against the Monarch 2.5-10x42 or 3-12x42 with BDC or MD either 'tho they are
at the upper end of my price range and cost more than my 23 yr old rifle, I'm also
partial to the ligher scopes but the two latter choices may give me more all 'round
utility from my favorite "go to" rifle.

The 2.5-10x42 Monarch is one of my favorite scopes and has hunted with me even in Africa. Great products and a best value. The Fullfield II scopes are good, but are not parallel in terms of quality level. The Monarchs are in the upper part of Nikon's offerings, whereas the FFII is more entry level in the Burris line. Optical performance of the Monarch is much superior. Much. It is a bit larger than what you may like for your short action A-Bolt, though. I am familiar with the Osprey line, but they should not be mentioned in this conversation with quality products made by Burris and Nikon. Seems like you read between the lines.

Okay Steve, I guess I'll bite the bullet and try the 2.5-10X42 Monarch, the specs.
show only 2.2 oz. more weight and just over an inch, if I should find it objectionable, it has a home on my Weatherby Vanguard in place of the cheapo scope
currently in place. The last time I went scope shopping, I had a full head of hair in one color (no "salt") and Papa "H" Bush was in office, I find all the current choices bewildering with huge differences in quality so I'm really grateful for the
advice and really glad I chanced upon this site - never heard of Optics Planet before. Now, to be, or errr, BDC or Mildot, that is the question??

Mildots are too busy for me, and rarely will a person use them as designed. They mostly use them for holdover, and the BDC reticle is a much superior system for this. Go with the BDC reticle. You will be thrilled with this scope. Since it has been a while since you bought one, you'll get to see first hand what time and technology has done with optics. This is an excellent scope. Click on this link for an account of a Safari last year when I used one.

Thanks Steve, I went ahead and ordered the Monarch 2.5-10X42 along with some Burris signature rings and offset inserts - the rear ring on the A-bolt is deflected abt. 1/8"to the left just to be able to zero the windage, otherwise I would have gone to a Weaver/Picatinny type of base, I'll still have to deflect the new rings abt.
1/16", using two .020 offset inserts, my A-bolt is a 1st yr. model with what seems
to be crooked base screw holes but puts 5 rds in one hole at 100 yds. with my cheap handloads using PMC bullets, minigun & M60 brass I collected, 16 yrs in the army as an infantryman and heli. crewchief(UH-1's & UH-60's). Enjoyed your safari blog, I'm
jealous! The R4 is actually a licensed copy of the Israeli Galil which in turn is a modified Finnish Valmet M76, the receivers actually came from Valmet. Galil is no longer produced, main customer were themselves, US aid is more like patronage to
Colt firearms, M16's always outnumbered Galil's there. Looking forward to hunting with my new scope and the range time as well!
