Remington 700 mountain LSS 30-06
I just purchased the Remington 700 mountain LSS and I'm looking at the Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40mm or 50mm Rifle Scope - Silver Finish.I currently hunt in Western NY where shots over 100 yards are uncommon but I'd like to be able to use the gun for hunting in areas that offer further shots. My questions are, 1: should I get the Boone and Crockett Reticle , 2: 40 or 50 mm and what are the best rings and bases for this rifle and scope. Thanks Jim

Hi,
This is an excellent scope choice and some good questions to go with it.
The Boone and Crockett reticle is made for long distance shooting. It is designed for a 200 yard sight-in and has holdover points for much greater distances. If you rarely get shots over 100 yards, then it's an unnecessary expense.
The 50mm objective will give you better performance in low light and will have better resolution than the 40mm, but at this magnification you will not notice the resolution difference. You will notice some difference in brightness during the early dawn and late dusk hours.
The downside to the 50mm objective is the mounting height. The 40mm scope can be mounted with low rings and in most cases the 50mm scope will need high rings.
For the base, use the Leupold 50016 - 2-pc Base Rem 700 Matte Black
For the low rings, use the Leupold 49898 - Std Rings Low Matte Black
For the High rings, use the Leupold 49904 - Std Rings High Matte Black

Ryan, If the B&C is sighted in at 200 yards would you have to compensate for shorter range shots of 20 through 200 yards? Thanks Jim
